The size of the breast is determined to a large extent by genetic codes, namely DNA structures. The remaining small portion is determined by nutritional habits and other environmental factors, as a combination of all these, the breast can be large or small. In rare cases, situations where one breast is much larger than the other breast can be encountered.

The development of the breast in healthy women begins with adolescence and lasts until the twenties. After this process, environmental factors completely affect the volume and shape of the breast. Contrary to popular belief, gaining too much weight does not directly affect breast volume. There is also a link between hormone activities and breast size or smallness. Evidence of this is seen after pregnancy and childbirth. During these periods when hormonal activities are at the peak, the breast may be thirty percent larger than it should be.

About Breast Reduction Surgery

Breasts can be distorted due to factors such as progression of age, pregnancy, weight gain, and use of wrong bras. Aesthetic intervention is required to the breasts to eliminate these distortions. Interventions can interfere with the volume of the breast or shape the breast over the connective tissues without touching the volume. Operations such as filling the breasts, changing the symmetry, changing the orientation of the nipples and reducing the breast can be performed.

Depending on the condition of the patient, certain combinations can also be created with related methods. It is considered acceptable that the female breast is upright, plump and the nipples are facing up. The purpose of all breast aesthetic surgeries is to achieve this appearance.

Today, the number of surgeries performed to shape the breast is rapidly increasing. Since our country is in a very advanced position in breast aesthetics, many patients from abroad come to our country to shape their breasts. A considerable number of people apply directly for breast reduction surgeries. Contrary to popular belief, the number of patients applying at a younger age rather than at advanced ages is higher. The ideal age for breast reduction surgeries is between 18-25.

Conditions Requiring Breast Reduction Surgery

Even if environmental factors are ideal, there may be excessive growth of breasts due to genetic features. At the same time, the current symmetry problems can be carried forward. Breast reduction surgery can be performed in any situation where the breast affects the comfort of life. Non-surgical but ineffective methods are recommended for patients who are afraid of making a surgical incision.

Breasts lose their aesthetic appearance after exceeding a certain size. In addition to the disappearance of the aesthetic appearance, it creates serious effects on the comfort of life. Living with large breasts for a long time also impairs the body’s health. Nowadays, according to the data collected from the field, large breasts pose problems such as:

  1. With the effect of gravity, large breasts put the spine under pressure on the vertical axis. The neck area, the most sensitive point of the spine, is also pulled down. Depending on this effect, shoulder and back pain, especially neck, are also encountered. This type of pain, especially after a long walk, is completely related to breast volume. These pain problems arise due to the fact that they increase the location effects, although they are not very heavy.
  2. Big breasts weaken connective tissues. Accordingly, the nipples that should normally be in an upright position begin to sag towards the abdomen. Diaper rash occurs at the contact points of the abdomen and breast tissue. It is also possible that bad odors may occur due to sweating and stuffiness.
  3. Although it is the naked appearance of the body that comes to mind when talking about aesthetics, clothes are also very effective in showing body aesthetics or hiding the bad look. Women with large breasts experience serious social problems because they cannot wear every dress they desire. They find it difficult to find clothes or start spending a lot more money to dress.
  4. Strong bras are required to carry large breasts. The weight increases as the breast volume grows. Accordingly, bruises, rashes and pits occur at the point where the bras are in contact with the shoulder.
  5. When sleeping for a rest after a long day, sleep is constantly interrupted due to pain caused by large breasts. In other words, big breasts indirectly affect sleep quality and life comfort.
  6. Women who are dealing with a big breast problem from a young age experience a hump problem both from the position they stood to hide their breasts and because the breasts press the spine vertically.
  7. Due to the condition of the spine, women with large breasts have a high risk of developing neck hernia over time.

All these situations make breast reduction operations mandatory. When people do not have breast reduction surgery, they are dealing with increasing problems day by day.

In addition to all these reasons, some people may develop different problems caused by large breasts. Any situation in which the breast exceeds the ideal size affects health negatively. Although it is possible to endure large breasts for a while because of their appearance, everyone wants their breasts to be reduced due to health problems. There are even those who want their breasts removed completely.

How are Breast Reduction Surgery Performed?

Breast reduction operations can be done in two different ways. Fat removal (liposuction) operations are easier but relatively ineffective. Breast reduction surgeries performed with surgical incisions give much more effective and permanent results.

Breast reduction operations with liposuction:

  1. It would be wrong to consider these operations as surgical methods.
  2. It is a method performed on patients who are afraid of surgery or whose problems are very small. It is often performed to make the breasts symmetrical.
  3. Within the method, the patient’s breast is analyzed. Since the volume of the breast is largely made up of adipose tissues, it is calculated that the volume will decrease by removing adipose tissues.
  4. After the analysis, the regions where the oil will be taken are marked.
  5. After the patient is anesthetized with local anesthesia, fat is drawn from the breast through special devices so as not to damage the milk ducts.
  6. Afterwards, the operation is completed by shaping the breast.
  7. Oil removal operations are very easy. Recovery time is short and comfortable.

The main method is breast reduction surgeries performed with the help of surgical incisions. These surgeries are performed as follows:

  1. Before entering the operation, the patient’s breast is analyzed. Breast reduction surgery is performed to patients whose volume of the breast is very large and whose problem cannot be solved by fat removal.
  2. Before the operation, the incision areas are marked, the patient’s breast will be drawn on the simulation and shown to the patient.
  3. Many factors are calculated in determining the method.
  4. Operation is performed under general anesthesia.
  5. Tissues must be removed to make the breast smaller. To do this, an incision is made in the nipple and under the breast.
  6. Excess tissue of the breast is removed from the incisions made.
  7. Afterwards, the opened incisions are closed and the operation is completed.

Breast reduction operations can take between one and two hours. How to act during the operation phase is determined by the wishes of the patient. It is tried not to damage milk channels in women who desire to become pregnant again. If the woman applying to breast reduction surgery is not likely to be pregnant or thought again, milk channels can be ignored and more aesthetic looks can be obtained.

There is a possibility of scarring after the operations, but thanks to advanced techniques, the seam points are closed with aesthetic methods. Due to the color mismatch in the nipple, it is almost impossible to see marks. The single scar remains inverted T, L or I in the lower region of the breast.

Before Breast Reduction Surgery

Although breast reduction surgeries are performed for simple and aesthetic purposes, it is necessary to prepare for both the guarantee of the next breast shape and the risks before the operation. The results are guaranteed by up to one hundred percent with the preparation process, especially before the operations involving surgical incision.

In the process before the operation, the patient chooses a doctor and hospital, conducts physical control, conducts examinations, selects the method and finalizes the operation. During the process, the patient is prepared for a surgical intervention under certain conditions. The only way to minimize the risks arising from the nature of surgery is this preparation process.

Doctor and Hospital Selection

Our country is far ahead in aesthetic surgery. It is the number one in the world especially in terms of breast aesthetic surgeries. The number of plastic surgeons and hospitals that naturally perform breast reduction surgeries is also enormous. Before the operation, it will be useful to choose a hospital with experienced and sufficient equipment.

In the selection of the surgeon:

  1. The name of the surgeon should be researched on the internet and comments about it should be examined.
  2. If available, medical history should be examined.
  3. Someone who has been ill should be contacted before.
  4. References should be examined in great detail.

In the selection section of the hospital:

  1. Generally, the choice of hospital is completed with the choice of surgeon, but there are some conditions for the patients who will choose the hospital first.
  2. It will be useful if the hospital is not under the stairs or an inadequate clinic.
  3. Immediate intervention should be available against complications that may occur during and after the operation.
  4. Patients who had previously been examined in the hospital and had their nipples shrunk should be discussed.
  5. The name of the hospital should be researched on the internet and comments should be read.

In general, the process goes like this. It is sufficient for patients to know that they have a choice.

Physical Examinations

After the hospital selection, it is investigated whether the patient is suitable for surgical intervention. Since the operation is carried out for aesthetic purposes, examinations can be carried out over a long period of time. During the physical examination of the patient, the condition of the breasts is examined. The problems are identified and the suitability of the surgery is determined as a solution. Afterwards, examinations are started to select the most appropriate method for the patient.

  1. Since the operation is performed with surgical incisions, a complete blood count and urine test are performed.
  2. The presence of infectious diseases, heart problems and lung problems are investigated. If there is an obstacle to surgery, it is detected.
  3. Then, imaging techniques about the breasts of the patient are started. Tests such as ultrasound and mammography are performed.

As a result of all examinations, the patient’s breast tissue is displayed to the finest detail. In addition to whether there is an obstacle to surgery, the way to be followed and the tissues to be taken are determined.

Based on the images obtained, the patient’s breast view after the operation is drawn and shown to the patient. After full agreement with the patient, the operation date is finalized and the things that the patient needs to do during the preparation process are specified.

Preparation Process

During the preparation process for breast reduction surgery, extreme conditions are not entered. Since the surgery is performed for aesthetic purposes, it should be comfortable, but the risks should not be ignored. The doctor’s recommendations should be followed to ensure the success of the operation, ensure that the shaped breast remains the same for a long time, and to achieve a fast and comfortable recovery process.

Before the operation, any activity that disrupts the body condition, which is determined in the examinations and deemed appropriate, should not be entered. Especially in blood values, extreme conditions, behaviors that will disrupt breast tissue, overfeeding or discontinuation should be avoided. During the healing process, any condition that may damage the tissues and increase the risk of complications during surgery is avoided.

Smoking and Alcohol Use

Controversy continues about the harms of alcohol use on the body. Although it is known that long-term and high use causes risks such as death, reasonable uses are not considered to be a problem. However, after the alcohol enters the body, it negatively affects the metabolism and liver. Alcohol consumption should be stopped completely at least one week before surgery in order to avoid these negative effects during the operation. It is recommended to take a break for at least one month after the operation.

Smoking is quite dangerous. It damages lung functions, disrupts breathing order. It increases the likelihood of anesthetic complications arising during surgery. It was found that the healing time was very long in patients who smoked and the tissues did not fully recover. For these reasons, if the surgery is at a distant date, smoking should be stopped completely. If the surgery is planned for an earlier date, it must be stopped a week in advance. Smoking should never be consumed after the operation in order to get a quick and comfortable and often full recovery.

Drug Use

During the reduction of the breasts and the milk ducts, the bleeding is more during the removal of the tissues. Since it is more beneficial that the blood tends to clot, it is necessary to avoid any medication that can dilute the blood and prevent it from clotting before the operation. Medicines that change the hormone balance and affect blood values should be consulted with the doctor.

At the planning stage of the operation, the doctor will ask what drugs are used and if necessary, adjust their dosage. Particular attention should be paid to painkillers used without a prescription. Any pain relievers that dilute the blood should be avoided. Generally, it is recommended to leave any medication that is not compulsory to be used one week before the operation.

Some foods can have negative effects on metabolism. In the last fifteen days of breast reduction surgeries with a long preparation period, it will be beneficial to consume such foods as little as possible or preferably not at all. Excessive fatty foods or overly acidic foods have negative effects on the general health of the body.

Some foods, especially vitamin E, make the blood more fluid. It will be beneficial not to consume such foods starting from one week before the operation. There should be no attempt to gain or lose weight before the operation. In other words, attempting to lose weight and shrink the breast volume may cause the operation to be rescheduled.

The hospitalization phase takes place on the day of the operation. From seven in the evening to the previous day, food consumption should be stopped entirely. In addition, the liquid consumption should be stopped after 10 pm. A good sleep should be observed and the hospital should be visited early in the morning. After going to the hospital, paperwork is done and taken to the patient room. After various preparations are made in his room (apron, etc.), he starts to wait for the operation time. Then, it is taken to the area where the operation will be performed, usually on a stretcher and sometimes on an outpatient basis.

No companion is required during hospitalization. There is no need for a companion since he can stand up immediately after the operation. Also, in some cases, routine tests such as blood tests and urine tests can be repeated. The operation is usually done before noon, so that the patient spends the evening at home.

After Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction operations are very simple, long preparation times are required and the healing process is comfortable. Since the operation is performed under general anesthesia, the patient is unconscious after the operation is completed. Until this situation disappears, the patient is rested in the room. In general, the patient is not hospitalized, but in some risky situations and when the breast volume is very large, the patient is hospitalized for a day. Very rarely, two days of hospitalization are also encountered.

In patients with very large breasts, a drain is installed to prevent fluid buildup that may be visible in the operation area. Patients with a drain should stay in the hospital for one day. On the second day, drains are removed before discharge is performed. After the drains are removed, the patient’s dressings are made and the sports bra is worn. After all these are completed, the discharge process is carried out. The patient is discharged standing. After leaving the hospital, it is recommended to go home and rest.

After the operation, the controls are done at the end of the first and second weeks. The reason for wearing the sports bra is to protect the breast from various effects and to shape it properly until the control process.

Pain and Drug Use

Since breast reduction operations are performed under general anesthesia, the patient does not feel the slightest pain during the operation. The effect of anesthesia continues for a while after the operation is completed. After the patient wakes up, special painkillers are given so that they do not feel pain. The patient does not feel the slightest pain during the rest period thanks to these drugs.

Drugs prescribed after the operation are painkillers and antibiotics. These drugs are written to completely eliminate the risk of infection and to prevent possible pain in advance. Patients must use the prescribed medications at the right doses and at the right time for the specified time. In this way, both the comfort after the operation is increased and the possible risks are completely eliminated.

Physician control is required to reintroduce or discontinue use of drugs before the operation. Generally, during the routine check in the second week, arrangements will be made for these drugs. Moreover, regardless of the physical effects of the operation, slight severe pain is observed from time to time for a year. These pains occur due to tissue healing. Most of the time they come out following a trauma in the region.

The operation is performed on the breasts. Naturally, it is avoided from areas that can seriously affect mobility. Since there is no intervention in the lower muscle groups, there is no harm in walking the patients after the operation. In general, patients can start walking immediately after being taken to the normal room and the effect of anesthesia has passed.

The region where the mobility is affected is the upper muscle groups. The neck, arms and shoulders are limited in terms of mobility. Excessive movements or loadings here have an impact on the shaping of the breasts. In addition, there is a possibility that the stitches thrown will burst. With all this in mind, the patient is asked to move as little as possible for a week, preferably two weeks. Without moving, the intent is not to strain the upper muscle groups. It is forbidden to lift boxes, raise arms, lift heavy, make sudden arm movements.

After the operation, dressing is made to the sutures, with the drains removed if fitted. The purpose of the dressing is to isolate the seams from the outside world and reduce the risk of infection. Dressings should be changed every two days. The reason it is not changed every day is that the blood clot formed positively affects the healing time.

The patient must go to the nearest hospital every two days after the operation to carefully change their dressings. The condition of the sutures is also checked in dressings.

Risks, Side Effects and Complications

There are risks associated with anesthesia, surgical procedures and intervention in the breast area in breast reduction surgeries. Thanks to today’s surgical technology and specialist physicians, although these risks are approached to zero, they cannot be reset. Various risks may arise depending on the patient’s condition, the level of expertise of the doctor, and the hospital conditions during or after each operation.

  1. There are some risks arising from the nature of the surgical intervention. There are risks such as clot formation and death, but their chances are incredibly low.
  2. There are risks associated with general anesthesia. Such as lung function loss, lung extinction, clot formation inside the lung. These possibilities are also very low due to the preparation process before the operation.
  3. Bleeding is one of the most common complications. The operation is generally bloody. The amount also increases according to the size of the intervention. After the operation is completed, the risk of bleeding is kept to a minimum. Bleeding may occur due to bursting or opening of the sutures that are thrown after breast reduction operations. With the emergence of bleeding, a doctor should be urgently consulted and the stitches should be freshened.
  4. Blood loss is one of the complications that develop due to bleeding. In case of excessive blood loss during the operation, the losses are compensated. If there is little but constant bleeding after the operation, the patient will have blood loss. Depending on this, conditions such as weakness, dizziness and nausea occur.
  5. Infection is one of the most likely risks that can develop. In case of not paying attention to hygiene after the operation, it is seized by microbes by the kidney. Accordingly, an infection develops. While the body is trying to heal the infection in the area, it can cause inflammation of the area. If antibiotic use is impaired, the risk of developing infections is very high. If the developing infection is not treated in a timely manner, the results of the operation may be compromised.
  6. Blood accumulation in the tissue, i.e. hematoma, is the internal bleeding from a small point after the operation and this blood accumulates in the tissue. Although it is not a dangerous situation, this blood accumulated in the tissue must be collected.
  7. Trace remains. Breast reduction operations are performed for aesthetic purposes. The fact that there is a scar that impairs aesthetics after the operation is contrary to the philosophy of breast reduction surgeries. The stitches thrown during the operation have aesthetic concerns. The areas to be sutured are carefully selected to keep as few marks as possible and not be visible in the rest. Nevertheless, marked scars may remain due to the patient’s body being too sensitive. In such a case, these scars are removed with correction surgery.
  8. Loss of breastfeeding function. As it is known, together with breast reduction surgeries, as much tissue is removed as necessary. However, the milk channels that meet at the nipple are cut within the operation. If there is a patient who wants to conceive again, the milk canals are tried to be damaged as little as possible. However, these channels can be damaged excessively for any reason during the operation. As a result, breastfeeding function may disappear partially or completely.
  9. Fat tissues may melt. Rather than the adipose tissues taken, the left adipose tissues may start to melt due to various reasons. As a result of this melting, tissues leak from the seams. It is a temporary situation but it should still be intervened by the doctor.
  10. Nipple loss. In breast reduction surgeries, it is rarely intervened in the nipple. The nipple is held even if the inner tissue of the breast is completely emptied to provide a natural appearance. Nipple may be lost due to a mistake made during the operation. In this case, an artificial nipple is made.
  11. Asymmetry is one of the complications that require correction surgery. The aim of breast reduction surgery is to obtain two breasts with sufficient fullness and symmetry. The symmetry between the two nipples may not be achieved due to the calculation error or the procedure error during the operation. This symmetry can be caused by tissue excess, angle distortion or nipples. Although it is a small possibility, a second operation is required if it occurs.
  12. If the connective tissues are formed incorrectly, less or more tissue than necessary after the operation, the breasts may sag after the operation. It is a very rare complication.

The point that should not be forgotten is that our country is at the very top level in terms of breast aesthetics. Almost all of our doctors are very experienced. For this reason, these complications are unlikely to occur, unless some extreme issues occur.

Things to pay attention to

In the period after breast reduction surgery, some issues should be taken into consideration in order to maintain its success in the operation. Thanks to the utmost care for these issues, the success of breast reduction operations is guaranteed and permanence is ensured.

  1. After the operation, when you leave the hospital, you should go directly to the house and enter a serious resting period. For at least three days until the fatigue of the surgical operation is eliminated. Ideally, you should rest for seven days. It would be beneficial not to overexert the upper muscle group during the rest period.
  2. As sports, only walks should be done for two months, and all kinds of moderate and severe sports affecting the upper muscle group should be avoided.
  3. Antibiotics and painkillers given after the operation should not be overused or underused. It should be used in exactly the amount and time that the doctor says.
  4. Dressing times should not be spent to ensure hygiene of the area.
  5. The first four days should not touch the area. From the fifth day, a shower can be taken so that the water is not too hot or too cold. It would also be beneficial to sterilize the shower area.
  6. Avoid public environments until stitches are removed. Turkish bath, sauna, sea and solarium are included in these public places.
  7. The sports bra given after the operation should be worn for two months. Normal bra should not be changed before this time just to look better.
  8. The chest area should be protected from even the smallest blows. The first two weeks you should never lie face down. Do not lie face down for a long time between two weeks and three months.
  9. After the operation, smoking should be stopped completely in order to prevent tissue damage and shorten the recovery period.

These are the things to be aware of in general. As long as this relatively simple surgery is supported by these issues, a successful and aesthetic appearance is inevitable. After the operation, you will be given what you need to pay attention to in writing by your doctor. It is imperative that you take maximum care of them.

After the operation, the stitches are removed on the tenth or twelfth day. The region should be treated with care until this time. In eating habits, it is recommended not to escape to the end points. Avoid excessively fatty, sugary or acidic foods. Feeding naturally and regularly is ideal for getting rid of operation shock.

With the removal of the stitches, you can return to desk work. However, these works should not require physical exertion. In the first two months, any kind of work that will tire the upper muscle group should be avoided. Starting from the second month, you can return to jobs that require physical effort. As of the third month, there is no harm in starting heavy workers and heavy sports. Since the exact results of the operation emerge from the sixth month, it will still be beneficial to treat the region with care until this time.

Sexual intercourse should be interrupted for two weeks after the operation. Afterwards, the breast area should not be tightened. Attention should be paid to breasts for at least three months.
